About Us

We educate, agitate, and mobilize to empower city workers to improve their lives and the New Orleans community.

New Orleans City Workers Organizing Committee (NOCWOC) is a caucus of rank-and-file union activists - that means we are workers and members of the union - who have joined together to make our union democratic and responsive to member concerns. As a caucus, we seek to inform and mobilize our fellow union members to win elections for our union executive committee and implement our platform in the bargaining process.

NOCWOC has been organizing since March 2020, largely as the sole worker-led union organizing committee among employees of the City of New Orleans. We led campaigns to protect public health and staff safety at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, led the Save Your NOLA Library Campaign in 2020 and 2021 that defended funding for our public library system, and won the campaign for $15/hour minimum wage for city workers and city contracted workers in 2021.

 Past Campaigns and Labor Activities

  • Save Our Libraries Campaign

In December 2021, New Orleans City Libaries workers campaigned and won against an attempt to devestate library funding by 40% by rallying against a millage that, if passed, would have gutted the libraries for the next 20 years. NOCWOC worked with the libraries and a coalition of community organizations and workers to prove that united, we stand stronger.

  • Fight for $15 Campaign

In August 2021, we were honored to rally with city workers who earn under $15 an hour. We seek justice for workers who need it the most, and are working for true equity, dignity and respect for our colleagues.

  • DPW Strike

In June 2021, NOCWOC supported the Department Public Works in their efforts to fight for a living wage and safe working conditions, after a vote was approved to increase pay for contractors - but not most city employees.
